Fancy Gold Panning? A short drive will take you to the highest village in Scotland, Wanlockhead and Leadhills where gold panning has been popular for centuries. Gold is found in the sands and gravels in the burns which act as a natural means of concentrating the gold.

At the highest village in Scotland you can find a narrow gauge heritage railway; Britain’s highest adhesion railway, passing through the industrial heritage of Leadhills. It’s a 10-15 mins drive from Wiston. www.leadhillsrailway.co.uk

Or if gardening is your thing, then the local botanic gardens is worth a visit. Dawyck is located in the hills of the Scottish Borders, it’s 65-acre five star Garden renowned for its seasonal displays of snowdrops, bluebells, rhododendrons, azaleas, blue poppies and autumn colour.

In Wiston and only a few minutes walk from the cottages is the magnificent Wiston Lodge built in 1850’s. Wiston Lodge is a special place with a rich history, set in beautiful grounds and gardens. One of Wiston Lodge’s major attractions is its outdoor space. The 53-acre estate consists of a wide variety of woodlands, with various walks, art installation and features to explore. During the summer months and school holidays, Wiston Lodge offers children’s holiday camps, bush craft courses etc bookable directly with them for a day or a week.
